American Sailing Association (ASA) certification is a globally recognized, structured path to safe sailing skills, improved confidence, and worldwide chartering opportunities. Certification offers lifelong value through potential insurance discounts and charter rate reductions, along with access to a sailing community, discounts on sailing gear, and a commitment to ocean protection and inclusive sailing.
We begin each day at 9:00 a.m. with some classroom/dry land instruction, reviewing what has been covered and what will be practiced on the water that day. We will then spend the rest of the day on the water, with about 1 hour for lunch. We will typically finish class for the day between 4:00 and 5:00. Of course, Mother Nature will sometimes intervene and we will need to be flexible and adjust our schedule accordingly.
Students must be able to pass both practical and written assessments for ASA Certification. The practical assessment is ongoing when we are out on the water, and covers all the learning standards for each ASA Course level. Students must also pass a written assessment which consists of 100 multiple choice questions.
For classroom learning, bring your textbook, any note-taking or study aids, and a bottle of water or beverage. When we are out on the water, you'll want comfortable clothes that allow freedom of movement, are lightweight, can protect from the sun, and dry quickly if they get wet. Non-marking boat shoes are requested and a lightweight windbreaker that is water-resistant, hat, sun glasses, sun screen, sailing gloves, and water bottle are recommended. Pack a lunch so that we can keep our lunch breaks to a reasonable amount of time and maximize our learning time.
